I came to SheCodes Basics with a frustrating problem: I could copy and paste code snippets and make things work, but I had no real understanding of why they worked or how to fix them when they broke. I was essentially a code copier, not a programmer. This surface-level approach left me constantly hitting walls. When something didn't work as expected, I'd spend hours trying random solutions from Stack Overflow without understanding the underlying logic. I could build functional pages by piecing together tutorials, but debugging felt like pure guesswork. SheCodes Basics changed that completely. Matt's teaching approach focuses on the "why" behind every concept, not just the "how." Instead of just showing us syntax, he explained the reasoning behind HTML structure, the cascade in CSS, and the logic flow in JavaScript. This foundational understanding was exactly what I'd been missing.Now when I encounter issues, I can methodically identify where things are going wrong instead of randomly trying solutions. I learned real life knowledge on how to build a responsive website, it was an interesting course.
The SheCodes Responsive Add-on provided good practice. To challenge myself further, I attempted to refactor my CSS and to add Spanish and Arabic translations. Working with Arabic for the web was different to working with Arabic in apps like InDesign or Word, and I'm sure there are better methods I have yet to learn to match the Latin script versions more closely. As I refactored my CSS, I would have benefitted from expert feedback to improve my skills and learn from any advice. It's a shame the course doesn't offer code review. Unfortunately, using AI for a code review was as reliable as I had hoped.

For this project, we built a fully responsive single page website without using any frameworks like Bootstrap. While frameworks definitely make things easier, I really appreciated learning how to do it the vanilla way. It gave me a deeper understanding of whatโs actually happening under the hood. Every challenge I faced taught me something new, not just technically, but personally. My final project, Mirembe Muse, is more than a landing page. Itโs a visual love letter to the values I believe in: natural beauty, ancestral healing, and self-devotion. Watching it come together with code I wrote myself has been incredibly empowering. Iโm walking away from this Add-On experience not only with a finished website Iโm proud of, but with confidence in my growing tech skills. I now see how coding can be soulful, expressive, and powerful and Iโm so excited for whatโs ahead. Thank you, SheCodes, for helping me realize whatโs possible when tech meets purpose.
Joining SheCodes Plus was the best decision I made for my coding journey! Before the workshops, I had zero experience with coding. The hands-on projects, especially the weather app, taught me real-world skills like working with APIs, JavaScript, and responsive design. The step-by-step videos made complex topics easy to follow, and the supportive community kept me motivated. Completing the SheCodes React workshop was a truly empowering experience for me. Despite facing many challenges as a woman denied access to formal education in Afghanistan, I was able to gain valuable skills in modern web development. I learned how to build responsive, interactive applications using React, manage state with hooks like useState, and handle API requests with Axios. The workshop not only improved my technical knowledge but also gave me the confidence to continue pursuing my dream of becoming a computer scientist.
