I came to SheCodes Basics with a frustrating problem: I could copy and paste code snippets and make things work, but I had no real understanding of why they worked or how to fix them when they broke. I was essentially a code copier, not a programmer. This surface-level approach left me constantly hitting walls. When something didn't work as expected, I'd spend hours trying random solutions from Stack Overflow without understanding the underlying logic. I could build functional pages by piecing together tutorials, but debugging felt like pure guesswork. SheCodes Basics changed that completely. Matt's teaching approach focuses on the "why" behind every concept, not just the "how." Instead of just showing us syntax, he explained the reasoning behind HTML structure, the cascade in CSS, and the logic flow in JavaScript. This foundational understanding was exactly what I'd been missing.Now when I encounter issues, I can methodically identify where things are going wrong instead of randomly trying solutions. I understand the connection between HTML structure and CSS selectors, why JavaScript functions behave certain ways, and how different parts of a webpage interact with each other. Building the tribute website for my Akita Inu, Sakura, became an exercise in applying these debugging skills in real time. When the background image wouldn't display or the responsive layout broke, I could systematically work through the problem instead of panicking. SheCodes didn't just teach me to code better - it taught me to think like a developer and search and solve problems with logic rather than luck.

I learned real life knowledge on how to build a responsive website, it was an interesting course.

The SheCodes Responsive Add-on provided good practice. To challenge myself further, I attempted to refactor my CSS and to add Spanish and Arabic translations. Working with Arabic for the web was different to working with Arabic in apps like InDesign or Word, and I'm sure there are better methods I have yet to learn to match the Latin script versions more closely. As I refactored my CSS, I would have benefitted from expert feedback to improve my skills and learn from any advice. It's a shame the course doesn't offer code review. Unfortunately, using AI for a code review was as reliable as I had hoped.

I enjoyed taking a deep dive into responsive design and working alongside Matt to create a responsive website. I made something that once again I am very proud of.

For this project, we built a fully responsive single page website without using any frameworks like Bootstrap. While frameworks definitely make things easier, I really appreciated learning how to do it the vanilla way. It gave me a deeper understanding of what’s actually happening under the hood. I especially loved learning how to work with embeds, and watching everything come together as the layout adapted across devices. I had a great time working on this project, it was one of the hardest for me personally. I had to start over countless times, because I wanted a perfect project. I built a responsive World Clock using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and the Moment.js and Moment-Timezone libraries. I am grateful to the SheCodes team for being able to say all these technical terms and know exactly what they mean because the lessons were easy to understand and apply.

Completing the SheCodes Basic Add-on course was such a fun and exciting experience! Matt made the lessons easy to follow, and I got to build a website about my favorite hobby — with a black theme, pictures, and responsive links. What started as curiosity quickly turned into a deep passion for web development. The journey has taught me how to structure clean code, design user-friendly layouts and bring pages to life. For my final project, I built a responsive web page that features real-time user interaction, conditional logic and custom styling all from scratch. It was both a challenge and a joy to create. Taking on the responsive add-on challenges was truly an eye-opening experience for me. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me understand the true power of responsive web design. Through this journey, I learned how to structure layouts more efficiently, adapt content for different screen sizes and make my websites not only look good but also feel intuitive to use across devices. I can safely say that I see the light now. I no longer fear CSS grids, flex layouts or media queries—instead, I embrace them with confidence. I really enjoyed the SheCodes course! From start to finish, I was completely engrossed in learning how to build code from scratch. The lessons were broken down in a way that made even the more complex concepts feel approachable, and I never felt overwhelmed. The structure of the course was brilliant, each module built on the last, giving me the confidence to apply what I'd learned in real-world projects.
