Of all the places I’ve traveled to, my trip to Angkor Wat remains the most unforgettable. As someone with a background in art and a passion for architecture and art history, Angkor Wat had always been high on my travel bucket list. Its intricate carvings, timeless structures, and the deep spiritual energy surrounding it had fascinated me for years.
The opportunity finally came after a volunteering trip in Phnom Penh. With a few extra days to spare, I decided to extend my stay and journey solo to Siem Reap — a decision that not only led me to one of the world’s most breathtaking heritage sites but also became my very first solo adventure.
I boarded a Giant Ibis bus from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. The journey was long but comfortable, and as we approached the city center, it felt like I was entering a different realm. Stone carvings of mythical creatures lined the roads, welcoming me into a place that felt untouched by time. Unlike any city I’d visited before, Siem Reap felt like stepping back into an ancient world.
I purchased a day pass to Angkor Wat — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and from the moment I entered, I was in awe. The vast temple complex, partially reclaimed by nature with massive tree roots and weathered stone structures, felt like something out of a dream. Every corridor, statue, and tower held centuries of history, art, and mystery.
With my pass, I spent the entire day exploring the ruins, soaking in the quiet grandeur and remarkable craftsmanship. In the late afternoon, I joined a slow-moving queue uphill to one of the best sunset viewpoints. As the sun dipped behind the iconic towers, the sky exploded in hues of gold and crimson. It was one of those rare, perfect moments that stay etched in your memory forever.
Determined to make the most of my visit, I woke up at 5 a.m. the next morning and hopped on a tuk-tuk back to Angkor Wat to witness its legendary sunrise. Alongside a quiet group of fellow travelers, I stood at the temple’s main entrance, waiting in hushed anticipation. As the first light crept up behind the silhouette of the ancient towers, the scene before me was nothing short of magical — serene, spiritual, and deeply moving.
On my final evening, I treated myself to a traditional Khmer dance performance at a cozy theater near the humble guesthouse where I stayed. The vibrant costumes, graceful movements, and captivating music offered a beautiful glimpse into Cambodian culture — a perfect closing chapter to my journey.
What began as a spontaneous escape — a simple desire to take a break from work without much planning or expectation — turned into a transformative experience. Not only did I fulfill a long-held dream, but I also rediscovered a sense of calm, wonder, and self-confidence. Traveling solo for the first time was empowering, and the beauty of Angkor Wat left me both inspired and rejuvenated.
This trip reminded me of the magic of unplanned moments, and the power of ancient places to stir something new within us. Angkor Wat will forever hold a special place in my heart — not just for its grandeur, but for the journey it inspired within me.
