"Car Radio" is a song written and recorded by TWENTY ØNE PILØTS, an
American musical duo that originates from Columbus, Ohio. Originally
appearing on their second studio album Regional at Best (2011), it
was re-recorded and released on March 18, 2014, as the sixth and
final single from their third album, Vessel (2013).
A live
performance of “Car Radio” at the LC Pavilion was uploaded to Fueled
by Ramen's YouTube channel on May 29, 2012, but was recorded at a
show on April 28, 2012.The song is notable for containing no chorus
and no hook.
The song was inspired by an event which had happened to frontman
Tyler Joseph during college. In an interview with Rock Sound, he
explained that one day he arrived to class late and forgot to lock
his car's door.
After class, he returned to discover that
someone had broken into his car and stolen everything inside,
including the radio, GPS and his CDs. At the time, Joseph didn't
have the finances necessary to afford to replace what was lost.
The subsequent experience of going on without his car radio
made him realize music can act as a distraction and can get in the
way of where your mind wants to go.
The lead singer Tyler Joseph founded the band in 2009 along with
former members Nick Thomas and Chris Salih who left in 2011, and
drummer Josh Dun joined that year. The band's name was inspired by
Joseph's study of 'All My Sons' by Arthur Miller, a play about a man
that finds equipment he manufactured for planes in World War II is
faulty and he must decide what to do, lose money and business by
recalling them or send them out anyway and hope for the best.
The man sends them out and twenty-one pilots die as a result.
Joseph explains that "we are all constantly encountering moral
crossroads where the decisions that benefit the 'now' will have
consequences down the road; but the decision that might seem tough
and tolling right away will ultimately be more rewarding".
This song has a profound effect on me in ways I still reflect on
evertytime I listen to. It tells a story of one man who is dealing
with his thoughts without external distractions, but in the overall
sense it is really about how each one of us has our inner demons and
stuggles that we go through everyday. Everyone is fighting a battle
that you can't understand and we all live in the center of our own
universe. The song really brings home the truth about music, what a
powerful and immersive experience it is to listen to a song that
allows you to ponder on the human experience and makes you question
about the emotions and feelings we are capable of. For me music is
more than just an entertainment piece, it creates strong ties to our
memories and helps you connect with others and with your inner self as
