Why Cooking Whisked Me Away

I've always loved classes with clear instructions and plug-and-play formulas. Cooking in Home Economics gave me that and creativity.

Story image 1 School was never exactly my happy place. I wasn't the kid who raised her hand with the right answer, or the one who thrived on memorizing chapters. Most classes left me feeling anxious, distracted, and a little defeated. Every so often, though, there was a subject that spoke my language. Those were the ones with formulas, instructions, proper inspiration, and a clear path forward. That's where I finally felt like I could breathe. I felt like I belonged, and I was meant to be there.

Story image 2 Home Economics was one of those rare places. In that kitchen classroom, learning wasn't about theory on a blackboard—it was hands-on, step-by-step, and forgiving in ways most other subjects weren't. A recipe was like math: measure, combine, follow the method, and you get something delicious at the end. It wasn't just structure that drew me in. Cooking let me be creative too. I could plate like it was art class, experiment like it was science, and still end up with something to share.

"Home Economics didn't just fill a subject slot on my timetable..." It was a place where I turned ALL school subjects into something I needed on a daily basis.

Story image 3 That spark carried me further. I went on to study Culinary Management in college, dreaming bigger with every dish I prepared. I even had plans to attend Bonnie Gordon School for Confectionary Arts in Toronto—a step into the sweet, whimsical side of food. However, just before that chapter began, life surprised me with a different bun in a different oven: my beautiful daughter. Motherhood redirected my path, but it didn't erase that passion.

Story image 4 Today, cooking still grounds me. It's the blend of creativity and structure that I craved in school, the skill that continues to nourish my family, and the art form that reminds me I can create joy with my own hands. Cooking didn't just fill a subject slot on my timetable—it whisked me away into a lifelong passion.

Formula

Structure

Recipes are just tasty formulas. Measurements, timing, techniques-when the method is clear, the results shine ✨ Cooking became the version of math that I could eat.

Art

Creativity

From recreating famous paintings in art class to plating dinner like an artist, I love the balance of inspiration and precision. Food styling is a canvas with herbs and sauces instead of paint and pencil crayons. 👨‍🎨

Passion

Joy

Food connects me to family, friends, and the stories I tell through flavour. 😋

Fun Food Facts

A good fact is like a pinch of salt - simple, but it makes everything better.

🥘 Technique

Heat loves patience

Searing isn't about moving food around - leave it be to build a crust, then with a quick flick of the wrist, toss it once and leave it again.
🥕 Prep

Prep is power

"Mise en place" isn't just a French culinary term - it's the secret ingredient to success. When you have everything in its place, cooking becomes a breeze.
🧂 Taste

Sat early, taste often

Season in layers so flavours develop instead of overwhelming the dish all at once.
🍋 Balance

Acid brings sparkle

Lemon, vinegar, yogurt, or tomatoes can brighten heavy dishes instantly.

Plating Inspiration

Appetizer beautifully plated

Appetizers: Use odd numbers (3 croquettes look better than 4). Keep plates clean and garnish lightly.

Main course beautifully plated

Main: Stack components for height, layer protein over starch, and drizzle sauce in a neat ring.

Dessert beautifully plated

Desserts: Contrast textures (creamy + crunchy). Finish with powdered sugar or a mint sprig.

Cocktail beautifully presented

Garnish: Use fresh herbs, edible flowers, or a sprinkle of spice to elevate your dish. Allow your garnish to give height.
